New Suede Yarn
Since I don’t have a job to go to, I went to Wal-Mart to pick up some knitting supplies and yarn. I wanted to make a cat bed, but they didn’t have the yarn the pattern calls for. I could’ve substituted, but I figured out I didn’t have enough money to get all the yarn at once and I’ve heard the horror stories about not getting all of the same dye lot.
I needed a crochet hook, another size of needle and a circular needle, so I got those. Then I racked my brain on what I could make with less skeins of yarn that wasn’t a scarf or a hat. I never did figure that part out, but I came across some Lion Brand Suede yarn and I loved the way it felt. Also it looked like it would be fairly easy to knit with. And it felt so yummy.Â
I bought 2 skeins of sage and 1 skein of ecru. I really had no idea what I was going to make. Tonight I figured out what I’m going to knit with the new yarn and I think I have enough yarn to do it. I’m going to make a bag/purse. Somehow I want to incorporate both colors and I have some ideas. Now I just want to work on it, but hubby’s tired of me knitting all day. So I’ve only gotten a few rows done on it. I’m not really following a pattern, but just doing my own thing after looking at many different patterns. I am taking ideas from several. For a first project other than a scarf or hat, I think I’ve got a challenging one. I’m doing something original AND I’m wanting to use 2 different colors and make some sort of illusion pattern. Whew…Â
I have NO frickin idea how it’s going to turn out, either.

That suede yarn is nice. I bought some more expensive suede-like yarn before Lion came out with theirs, and I like theirs better (and it’s way cheaper).
The not knowing what or how something is going to turn out is half the fun of knitting for me. When I strictly follow a pattern (like that damn endless sweater), it gets boring and tedious. Just doing something and making it up as I go along is SO much more fun … and whatever you end up with is your design and totally original!
Congrats on moving on from hats and scarfs. I did purses next too, and I love making them. I still do tons of scarves though, because they are so easy, usually quick and I get that whole meditation thing going on. :D
Right now I am trying to figure out what to do with two balls of Lion Fun Fur (in grape and green mix, love the colors). No ideas coming to me yet, and I don’t need another scarf. LOL!
Was sorry to hear about your job. That sucks, and it may set back your schooling a little, but don’t let that get you down. Just keep the end goal in mind and keep pressing forward.

Oh, I love the way this yarn feels, but it’s not quite as easy to work with as I first thought it would be. I already had to frog it once, so I had to start over.
So far I’ve discovered yarn is not cheap by any means. I stopped by after class tonight at another craft store and they had the yarn I was originally looking for, so I bought the number of skeins I needed. It was about $28 or so. You can’t find any double pointed needles in this area for some reason, either. Anyhow, I have the supplies now to make the cat bed I wanted to make.
For $28 I could have gone and bought a nice cat bed, though. Of course it wouldn’t be homemade by me, so my cats better appreciate the work I put into their bed. :biglaugh:
Like I really think they will stay away from my other knitting… But one can hope they will. I have their favorite toy and that always seems to work to distract them from my yarn. Otherwise you’re like to find the yarn bit in two or so close to being bit in half that when you tug on it, it breaks. My other cat I used to have would do that to your shoelaces at night. Nothing like being half asleep in the morning and tying your shoes and end up punching yourself in the face when the shoelace breaks.
Actually I may not have to set my schooling back. As it turns out, I’m getting about 50 dollars less a week than I was at my job. Of course that’s without benefits, etc. Anyhow, I figure I can probably make a bit of extra money playing poker online, selling stuff on Ebay for myself or other people or any other odd jobs I can get. It sucks, but it isn’t as bad as I originally thought. Plus I have more time to knit.
As for the fun fur, 2 balls probably won’t go too far. Maybe you could make some cute furry little animal with it? I thought about doing that at some point. But I have enough projects on needles right now and I’m excited about the illusion pattern I want to do. Which reminds me that I need some graph paper for it. If it turns out really nice, sometime I might want to make a blanket with squares where the colors alternate but the same pattern exists. I don’t know if I’d use the suede yarn for that or not. I just love soft fuzzy yarn. :biglaugh:
